Rain or shine
“We drove more than an hour to come here so we are not going to give up queuing!” said another chirpy parent, who wants to get more English books for her children. “There is a lesser variety of English books for children here in Taiwan.”.
The turnout of visitors in Taichung has been overwhelming; leaving even the crewmembers to wonder what it is about Logos Hope that has aroused so much attention and interest. There was only one way to find out why.
Taking a walk around the quayside, one sees lines of people queuing under rainbow-coloured tents. Look closer and you will notice the excited and smiling faces of visitors. Approach them and ask how long they have been in the queue and you would be surprised. “We have been queuing for two and a half hours!” chimed an animated dad who was with his wife and two little girls, perspiring rapidly in the humid weather, desperately trying to keep cool with a paper fan.
Some families had even prepared portable chairs for their children while waiting in line. “We drove more than an hour to come here so we are not going to give up queuing!” said another chirpy parent, who wants to get more English books for her children. “There is a lesser variety of English books for children here in Taiwan.”
Portable toilets and even a food market have been set up right at the quayside to serve the large number of visitors. Different vendors have come to the quayside to sell various things like fans, balloons, and even electronic skateboards – taking advantage of the waiting crowds. Over the weekend, it was pouring heavily but that did not stop people from coming. Almost 19,000 people visited last Saturday and some couldn’t make it onto the ship even after a three hour wait.
Crewmembers are expecting more this weekend. “Logos Hope is really special and unique for Taiwanese as we have never seen anything like this. It’s a great idea to carry books on a ship and bring knowledge all around the world,” said Ruth, one of the visitors who had got through the queue and made it onto the ship.
